Floor Coatings in Nottawa
Farm shops and rural garages a few kilometres south of Collingwood, two or three times the size of a town bay, and half of them poured before the vapour barrier was standard.
A short drive produces a completely different job. Nottawa and the farmland around it sit minutes from the subdivisions, and the slabs are bigger, older, and were poured for work rather than for parking a car.
The moisture test matters more here than anywhere
A slab poured before vapour barriers were standard sits directly on the ground, and on the clay and lowland soil through Clearview that ground holds water. Moisture drives upward through the concrete continuously, and it will lift any coating put over it however well the surface was prepared.
So on a rural slab of unknown age we will not quote a coating from a photograph. A calcium chloride or relative humidity test decides whether the floor is coatable, whether it needs a moisture-tolerant primer, or whether the honest answer is a sealer and no coating at all. That test costs a fraction of a failed floor, which is the entire argument for it.
What actually drives on a farm shop floor
- Tractor and implement tyres, which load a far smaller contact patch than a car and find every weak spot in a resurfaced area.
- Steel wheels and dropped tools, which is an impact requirement rather than an abrasion one.
- Fuel, hydraulic oil and fertiliser, none of which every resin tolerates. Tell us what is stored in the building.
- No heat, in most cases, which narrows the product list for two-thirds of the year exactly as it does at the chalets.
Shop and garage floor coating on a Nottawa property
Large unheated slabs are where the cost per square foot is lowest and the preparation is the biggest share of the bill, because grinding 1,200 square feet is most of the labour on the job. If the budget is tight, coat the bay you actually work in and seal the rest. That is a better answer than a thin product spread over everything, and we will say so. See concrete grinding and prep.

Tell us the size of the bay, roughly when the slab was poured, and whether the building is heated. That is usually enough for a realistic range over the phone — and enough for us to say if you are in the small group of floors where the honest answer is to fix the water before spending anything on a coating.
