A garage floor coating kit costs a few hundred dollars at any big box store on Highway 26. A professional floor on the same garage costs four figures. That gap is large enough that everyone considering the second one first considers the first, and they should.

What is actually in the box
A Rust-Oleum EpoxyShield kit contains a two part water based epoxy, a citric acid etching solution, decorative flake, and a stir stick. Rust-Oleum is a serious coatings manufacturer and the product is not a fraud. It is a thin film consumer epoxy, sold to be applied by one person over a weekend, and it performs the way a thin film consumer epoxy performs.
What is not in the box is everything that decides whether a coating survives.
There is no moisture test. There is no grinder. There is no crack repair, no control joint treatment, no spall patching, and no primer matched to a damp slab. The kit assumes your concrete is clean, dry, warm and sound. If it is, the kit works reasonably well. In Collingwood and Wasaga Beach, it very often is not.
The etch is the whole argument
Concrete does not accept a coating because the coating is sticky. It accepts a coating because the surface has been opened up so the resin can key into it mechanically.
Professionals do that with a diamond grinder, which removes the hard troweled top layer and leaves a consistent concrete surface profile across the entire slab. For a thin film system the target is roughly CSP 2 to 3. It is measurable, it is repeatable, and you can see it.
A kit does it with acid, because you cannot ship a grinder in a box. Etching works chemically and it works unevenly. It does almost nothing where the slab has been sealed at construction, where a vehicle has dripped oil for a decade, or where the finisher power trowelled it especially hard. You end up with a floor that is well prepared in some places and barely prepared in others, and the coating fails first in the second kind of place.
That is the mechanism behind nearly every peeling garage floor. Not bad product. Bad bond.
What the climate does to it
The second problem is the one almost no national product page mentions, because the copy is not written for this latitude.
Consumer epoxy wants the slab at roughly 10 degrees Celsius and rising for most of a day. Not the air, the slab. Concrete is a large thermal mass sitting on ground that is frozen for months, and it lags air temperature by days in the direction that hurts.
In an unheated garage between here and Thornbury, the slab is below that working range from about mid October to early May. Seven months. Anyone applying a consumer epoxy in that window is applying a coating that cannot cure properly, and no amount of care with the roller changes it.
Then the salt arrives. A vehicle parked here through the winter carries brine onto the floor every day for five months, and it sits in the surface as the vehicle warms. Two cases where you should buy the kit
If the floor belongs to a rental property, or a shop where the only real complaint is concrete dust on everything, the kit is a sensible purchase. The commercial and shop floors service page covers what a professional version of that job involves, and for many shops the honest answer is that they do not need it.
If the house is being sold in the spring and you want the garage to photograph well, the kit does that. Be straight with yourself that it is a cosmetic decision with a short horizon.
Where the kit costs you more than it saves
The expensive failure is not the kit. It is the removal.
A failed thin film coating has to come off before anything else goes on, and grinding off a peeling epoxy is slower and dirtier than grinding bare concrete. Homeowners who did the kit first and called a contractor two years later pay for that removal on top of the floor they were always going to buy.
If you already know you want the floor done once and left alone, the kit is a detour with a fee at the end of it.
Before you decide either way
